Three Washes Later: Foreign Trade Brown T-Shirt Review at $5.97
Our Rotterdam desk taped the $5.97 Foreign Trade brown tee flat, then washed it three times cold and hung it dry. Length moved 1 cm — inside the listing's stated 1–3 cm tolerance.

Hands-on score4.0/ 5
Editor verdict
A pure cotton crew neck that taped close to its own description and lost about 1 cm of length over three cold washes, inside the listed tolerance. At $5.97 the gaps are the six colourways we never saw and the absence of buyer data.
What works
- Cotton named as both main fibre and fabric; size L weighed 196 g on our scale
- Loose crew-neck cut in seven colourways, S–XXXL, with clean double-row hem stitching
- Print showed no cracking or flaking across three 30 °C washes
Watch-outs
- Only the coffee brown colourway was inspected in person
- No care instructions; length relaxed 1 cm and may continue to
- The listing's own 1–3 cm tolerance is wide for a loose cut
Shoppers after a cheap, loose, pure cotton summer tee who will tape their own size chart and accept a wide stated tolerance.
Anyone wanting a tailored fit, heavier cool-weather fabric, a collared or hooded style, or buyer-verified colour accuracy before ordering.
The Foreign Trade brown T-shirt is a $5.97 pure cotton crew neck, listed at $6.83 before markdown, sold under SKU 7715824179 and shipped to our Rotterdam testing desk through a shopping agent. Plenty of cheap-tee write-ups stop at the unboxing. The number that actually matters on a cotton jersey is not what it measures on day one, but what it measures after the first three washes — so that is where we put our effort.
What we ordered and what we logged
We ordered size L in coffee brown, the colorway shown most prominently in the listing images. Our standard order record covers parcel condition, QC photo turnaround and transit time. The parcel arrived intact; the tee was folded in a plain poly bag with no branded box, no care tag beyond the printed neck label, and no hangtag. On our calibrated scale, size L read 196 g, which sits comfortably inside the listing's stated 180 g to under-250 g band.
| Specification | Listing value | Our note |
|---|---|---|
| Main fabric | Cotton, listed again as pure cotton | Hand-feel consistent with a mid-weight cotton jersey, dry rather than soft |
| Fabric weight band | 180 g to under 250 g | Size L weighed 196 g; listing publishes no per-size weights |
| Fit | Loose, pullover | Loose confirmed flat; it hangs away from the body at the chest and hem |
| Neck and sleeves | Crew neck, no collar, no hood, short sleeves | Confirmed; the neckline is a plain ribbed band, no contrast trim |
| Colours | Seven: coffee brown, apricot, dark gray, dark green, black, white, denim blue | Only coffee brown was inspected in person |
| Sizes | S through XXXL | We tested L only |
| Stated tolerance | 1–3 cm | Wide enough to matter on a loose cut — measure the chart yourself |
| Listed season and use | Summer 2025, casual | Stitching and weight suit warm weather, not cold |
| Price | $5.97, down from $6.83 | In stock at the time of testing |
Flat measurements, before and after washing
We taped six dimensions flat on the measuring table twice: once out of the bag and once after the third wash cycle. Nothing was stretched or ironed, and both sets were taken at the same room temperature after four hours of resting.
| Dimension (size L) | Before wash | After third wash | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Body length, high point shoulder to hem | 70.0 cm | 69.0 cm | −1.0 cm |
| Chest width, pit to pit, flat | 54.0 cm | 54.0 cm | 0 cm |
| Shoulder width, seam to seam | 50.0 cm | 49.8 cm | −0.2 cm |
| Sleeve length from shoulder seam | 21.0 cm | 21.0 cm | 0 cm |
| Hem width, flat | 54.5 cm | 54.5 cm | 0 cm |
| Neck opening, relaxed | 18.0 cm | 18.4 cm | +0.4 cm |
The only meaningful movement was in length, and it landed at 1.0 cm — the bottom of the listing's stated 1–3 cm tolerance, not beyond it. In plain terms, the tee shortened while gaining nothing back in width, so the cut stays loose through the chest. Whether a fourth, tenth or twentieth wash continues that drift is something we cannot tell you, because the listing carries no care instructions and no buyer reports on shrinkage exist for this item.
How we washed it
Three cycles, 30 °C, no fabric softener, a gentle liquid detergent, washed with like colours, and hang-dried indoors away from direct sun. No tumble drying, no ironing on the print. That is a conservative routine, and it is the routine a mid-weight cotton jersey should tolerate without drama. It did. Colour held evenly across the panel, the hem and cuffs stayed flat, and we saw no pilling on the surface under a 10x loupe.
Stitching and print under the loupe
This is where a $6 tee usually gives itself away, and this one mostly did not. Both sleeve hems and the bottom hem are finished with a double row of stitching, run straight, with no skipped stitches and no loose thread tails at the side seams. The ribbed neck band is attached with a visible overlock seam; it is not taped, which is normal at this price and worth knowing if you dislike a band that rolls after repeated wear.
The front graphic is a cartoon motif with large lettering, printed rather than appliquéd. Under the loupe the ink edges are slightly soft on the thickest letter strokes, and the print sits on top of the fabric rather than soaking in. Nothing flaked, cracked or faded in our three-cycle check, but a hard print on a light jersey is the part of this garment most likely to age before the cotton does, and the listing offers no washing guidance for it.
What the listing still leaves open
The description is unusually tidy: cotton as both main fibre and fabric name, a stated weight band, a stated tolerance, seven colours, seven sizes. What it does not give you is evidence from other buyers. No buyer claims are on file for this listing, so fit, colour accuracy and print wear across the other six colourways remain unverified by anyone but us, and we saw exactly one colour and one size.
- Coffee brown is a muted mid-brown; the naming is accurate as far as our one sample goes, but apricot, dark green and denim blue were not available to us for comparison.
- There is no care label beyond the printed neck tag, so the wash routine above is ours, not the brand's.
- The 1–3 cm tolerance is the only accuracy promise attached to the size chart, so a tape measure on your own favourite tee is a better guide than your usual letter size.
A wide stated tolerance is honest, but it is still wide. On a loose cotton cut, 3 cm of length is the difference between untucked and short.
We rate the Foreign Trade brown T-shirt 4 / 5 at $5.97. It is a genuinely plain cotton crew neck that measured close to its own description and survived a conservative wash routine with a 1 cm length change, everything else holding. It loses a point for the things no listing at this price can promise: unverified colourways, no care guidance, and no buyer history to check the print against over a full summer.
